Now that the designers have been whittled down, we are starting to get some intriguing matchups, ranging from the insufferable to mildly annoying. This week we had Daniel/Richard, Layana/Stanley, Kate/Tu, Patricia/Samantha and Michelle/Amanda.
This week the designers have to create a prom dress using duct tape, with 20% of their score based on the reactions of high school students
Here are the 5 most memorable moments.
1. QUACKING UP
When Heidi brought that duck out, and mentioned "Unconventional Challenge," I can't be the only who thought, "They have to design for corporate mascots!" The AFLAC Duck, FLO from those Progressive ads, and those two hot "I'm here to snake your drain and flush your pipe" guys from Liquid Plumber.
2. DOWNFALL OF A DISNEY PRINCESS
Kate was almost as polarizing as Patricia, with opinions ranging from Daniel's "Disney Dominatrix" to Michelle, who makes actual retching sounds discussing her, calling it "gross schtick." Wow.
3. ALL THAT GLITTERS
The funniest storyline of the night was the rise and fall, crash and burn of Richard and Daniel, who started out cocky and obnoxious, high-fiving each other because of their mutual brilliance. That quickly ended when a stunned Heidi let them in on the sad truth.
4. FIRE SALE
I've now given up on trying to figure out the judges. They gave this design runner-up status (and the students picked it as their favorite), but the only thing I can think of when I look at is that from the waist down, it looks like it had caught on fire, which was hastily trampled out. I just don't get it.
5. HEY LOOK ... AN ACTUAL PROM DRESS
Here's something else I don't get. BOTH Kate and Tu were sent packing, in a surprise double Auf for this dress ... which is the only design of the night that looks like ... an actual prom dress. Nina especially was clueless about what real prom dresses look like, and I love the fact that Zak Posen, who has been pretty nondescript so far this season as Michael Kors' replacement, smacked down both her and Heidi on the subject. But there's no way this was the worst design of the week.
I was not surprised that Tu was sent home, but the dismissal of Kate shocked me. If she had only stepped back a bit from taking all of the responsibility, I'm sure she would she still be there.
You can see all of the designs below, starting with Michelle's winning entry (which was a fun design, but means we're going to have to hear her gloat for the rest of the season).
What did you think of this week's challenge?
