Happy 3/14, a.k.a. "Pi Day," a festive occasion in high school math wings when teachers sometimes bring in slices of Bavarian Cream and Lemon Meringue for their brainy students. Let's take this celebration of pie one step further and select the greatest pie scene in movie history. Pick one, then scroll down to see if yours matches mine.
You may have selected Octavia Spencer's scene-stealing work in The Help, or you may have picked Jason Biggs' virginal dalliance with an apple pie in American Pie. I'm going with a scene from one of my favorite candidates for "Best Movie Ever?", the amazing and touching coming-of-age jamStand By Me, starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell as a bunch of burnout kids who embark on a trek to find the body of a dead classmate.
When the quartet sits around a campfire one night, Gordie (Wheaton) indulges his gift for storytelling and invents a tale to entertain his pals. The story concerns a pie-eating contest and one of its cunning contestants, a bullied kid who figures out a brilliant way to get revenge against his awful town. You'll never eat pie the same way again. (I'm more of a cake guy anyway -- or a "cake boy," in Clueless terms.)
Your turn. What's your pick in pie cinema?
