"The New Normal" Recap: Jesus Was Ripped

I'm a terrible person. I admit it. Every time someone starts to talk about religion, my eyes glaze over and I zone out. That's totally my thing. So the latest The New Normal was not exactly my favorite episode. But let's just soldier on, shall we?

  • We start with Bryan making another video for the baby, which is sweet and adorable until it leads into talk of Godparents.
  • Goldie and Shania visit Gary Snyder over at the surrogacy office. He impresses upon them that as soon as she pops out the kid, she needs to move on.

  • Shania thinks that idea is ridiculous as she considers the baby her sibling. Uh oh.
  • Bryan and David have their lesbian friends over to talk to them about being god parents. Tiffany and Victoria have a minor meltdown because they can't have kids themselves and refuse. Lesbians can be so silly.
  • Goldie tries to counsel Shania about the dangers of getting too attached to Bryan and David, but her fierce little girl won't even hear it. Someone should reassure Goldie that the kid will be in third grade by the time TNN is over, so she doesn't need to worry about being cut out of the kid's life.
  • Bryan visits the Catholic Church and we are presented with the notion that really the Church isn't so bad and no one cares what the Pope says anyway. At this point, even I'm getting irritated by the way the show-runners are pandering to the enemies of the gay community.
  • Marshmallow, the guinea pig that Shania was taking care of as part of a class project, snuffs it while Bravid are (for no reason given) pet sitting.
  • The funniest moment of the episode comes in when Bryan tells Rocky to go to the pet store to find a replacement so Shania never finds out. Rocky goes to Google on her phone how many times that trick has been tried and failed on TV sitcoms.
  • Naturally, they try it anyway. And naturally, it fails.
  • Shania learns about life and death. Yawn.
  • Goldie gives Bryan and David a heartfelt talk about how everyone she's ever depended on has abandoned her. They tell her they never will, which seems like a ridiculously over-ambitious and open-ended promise to me.

  • Bryan and David are chatting in bed, which reminds me why I love this show so I start to feel better. This show may be hit and miss, but at least you know these characters are a gay couple.
  • They decide to make Rocky and Shania the baby's god parents. And thank God, this episode is finally over.

Funniest Bit:

Bryan: Rocky, what are you doing?

Rocky: Googling to see how many TV families have tried the same old tired plan that never works...

Best Performance: Goldie, I think. She really showed a growing strength and maturity in this episode.

Gayest Moment: Bryan admitting he was made to feel physically inadequate as a teenager because Jesus was "ripped."
