"The New Normal" Recap: An Internet Troll is Born

We’re back! Between the disaster that hit New York/New Jersey and the one that befell the Republican Party, The New Normal had a little break. And it seems the Halloween episode has been shelved for now. Instead, we got an “internet addiction is bad” episode. As it turns out, this was a lot funnier than I expected.

  • Bryan and David are learning CPR in case of an emergency with their baby. Or, rather, they are trying to learn CPR but they have Twitter emergencies and can’t focus. I have friends like this. I found it funnier on the show than I do in real life
  • We switch to Jane having lunch with Rocky. We don’t actually get a reason behind this and my brain short-circuited trying to come up with one.
  • Rocky does the Internet a disservice by getting Jane onto Twitter.
  • Our unique family is sitting down to a take-out dinner and out comes the iPads, the iPhones and the iDon’tWantToPayAttentiontoYous. This is a typical family meal at one of my friends’ house. Only Goldie has the courage to do what I don’t, and she tells them to stop it and interact as people.
  • In yet another WTF plot point, Nana is in Bryan’s office chatting with her four-hundred-plus Twitter followers. She wants Rocky to teach her how to do more internet stuff.

  • Rocky has, against all sense, given Nana full access to Bryan’s computer. Unsurprisingly, there is a video on in that Jane tweets to the entire world. Sadly, it’s not a Bryan/David sex tape. It’s a cute and silly wedding present video.
  • Shania reacts badly to the idea of a “day without technology.” She equates not being able to check your Tweets for a few hours with living back in colonial times. Oh, Shania, I love you but you need to be sent to your room. For serious.
  • Bryan’s video goes viral. Bryan is mortified. He confronts Jane, but like the newly-minted Internet troll that she is, she tells him she doesn’t care.
  • Bryan goes to work and we lay to rest any doubt that he is Ryan Murphy and the show he works on is Glee. We see look-alikes for Artie, Finn and Mercedes. We see girls in cheerleader outfits. And one actress with a name that sounds very much like Lea is announced as his favorite. We just drowned in meta.
  • The show ends with another adorable “Bravid in Bed” scene where our couple cuddles and kisses. It's wonderful and gay, and it’s beautiful.

Funniest Bit:

Jane: "Brett Easton Ellis is following me? Blocked!"

Best Performance: None of the performances really stood out for me, but I'll give it to Shania this time around. As annoyingly bratty as her whole "without the internet we might as well be pioneers" routine was, she sold it well.

Gayest Moment: That Bryan video to David was not just the gayest moment of the episode, I think it was the gayest moment of the human race.
