And you thought Top Gun couldn't be any gayer.
We're getting down to the final episodes, which means the producers have to work overtime to manipulate the outcome to get the final that they want. That was certainly the case this week, as a wrench was thrown into the well-oiled machine. A wrench named Joshua.
Josh has repeatedly been in the bottom three, and was dangling by a thread, and it seemed a certainty that he would be booted, leaving the top three Anthony, Emilio, and Uli, but he did the unexpected this week ... he made something good.
The challenge this episode is to create a look for a female veteran that she can wear to an upcoming event. It was a terrific version of the "Real Woman" Challenge, and it affected Josh more than any of the other designers. As he tells Joanna Coles, it hits close to home for him, as his brother (who he also mentioned during his regular season) is currently serving in Afghanistan, so this challenge has a special meaning. Speaking of Josh's brother ... RAWWR!
Let's take a look at how each of the designers fared!
ANTHONY RYAN - This is the moment that PR All-Stars officially jumped the shark. Anthony's veteran had one request ... to keep her breasts (which she is very self-conscious about) as "hidden" as possible. In other words, don't do what he did. This is not only the worst thing Anthony has done, it's definitely in the running for the most unflattering, cringe-worthy design of the season. If you don't want to emphasize her chest, don't do something that will immediately draw your attention to it. There's no getting around it ... it's a UNI-BOOB.
But what really signaled the end of this show as something even remotely plausible was that the judges ... well Isaac Mizrahi ... defended it. It was quite embarrassing to see Issac fumble for something good to say, eventually settling on calling it "young, chic, and fresh," which it is none of, and it's clear that either because the producers told him to, or because he has a thing for Anthony, his fashion sense has abandoned him.
EMILIO - Emilio was in the bottom two with Anthony, and made what was by far the sloppiest thing he's ever designed. It was made ... literally ... from scraps, and it looks like it. His veteran wanted him to design something she could wear to a bachelorette party. The only way it would work is if she was the stripper ... one tug and that mess will completely fall apart.
JOSHUA - Finally! I always thought Josh had one good week in him, and he picked the most opportune time to flourish. Joanna pointed out that he seemed to have a renewed energy, and that was certainly the case, as he was able to reign in his tacky tendencies and create a design that was well-suited for his veteran. When he initially started pulling that leopard fabric down, I cringed, fearing the worst, but as you can see, he used it sparingly. And extra kudos for not hiding her prosthetic leg, which was actually a touching choice. And of course ... OMG THE DOGGIE!
ULI - Uli made ... an Uli dress. To be fair, it's what her veteran wanted, and the end result is nice, but it's not like she had to stretch ... at all this week.
So Josh is given the win, which totally upsets the natural order of things. Anthony and Emilio are in the bottom two, and as soon as that was announced, I knew there was no way we were having an elimination this week, especially since Anthony was the clear loser. And sure enough, Anthony is told "You're safe." Not "You're out," or "You're In" but "You're safe." And then Emilio is also told "You're safe as well."
If Josh can have another good week, it'll be interesting to see how they handle that situation. I still can't see any other final but Anthony, Uli, and Emilio. What do you think?
Oh, you may be wondering about the title of this recap, "Crazy Crowns Crazy." It really has no meaning, and I assure you it has nothing to do with the fact that guest judge Katie Holmes presented Joshua with the win.
