Justin Timberlake and Beyonce apparently don't care about the sanctity of Oscar nominations day. Both performers interrupted our continuous flow of Academy news to announce that they will be releasing new music. Are they still bitter about not earning Oscar nominations for The Social Network and Dreamgirls? Hmm.
Just after midnight last night, Timberlake tweeted a tease indicating he might be posting a new song at 9:01 p.m. tonight. Fascinating! Here's an accompanying video announcing his comeback.
Beyonce, meanwhile, is reuniting with Destiny's Child for a compilation of their old ballads, to be released by the end of this month. Better yet, the album will feature a new track called "Nuclear."
Both announcements have me thinking: What are the best moments of Justin Timberlake and Beyonce?
Beginning with JT, I'd rank his greatest works accordingly:
5. "My Love": A funky, indigo-tinged jam off FutureSex/LoveSounds
4. "What Goes Around Comes Around": A meditative epic
3. "Rock Your Body": And not just because I thought he was singing, "I'm going to dip your naked body into this sauce" instead of "I'm going to have you naked by the end of this song."
2. "Sexyback": The song that launched a million "I'm bringing sexy back" puns, as well as a revived interest in GQ-style skinny ties.
1. "Cry Me a River"
Other Timberlake jams may be deeper, and some may even be catchier, but "Cry Me a River" is such a twisted, creepy song with a video that's just as unforgettable. I'd say it's not very dated either, minus the video's "Weapon of Choice"-style choreography and Abercrombie catalog haze.
As for Destiny's Child, I'd rank their best works accordingly.
5. "Independent Women, Part I": Charlie's Angels may have been terrible, but this was an inspired track about female solidarity.
4. "Bugaboo": I love sassy Destiny's Child. Listening to the girls coo "Break my lease so I can moooove" is the best of their soulful, finger-wagging attitude.
3. "Jumpin', Jumpin'": Club-banger, pure and simple.
2. "Bootylicious": An ingenious riff off Stevie Nicks'"Edge of Seventeen."
1. "Lose My Breath"
It never got sassier, sexier, cooler, or more danceable than "Lose My Breath." The album Destiny Fulfilled may have been a letdown, but this military-style dance track is a full-scale throwdown full of wild drum beats and deadly attitude. What are your fave moments by these legends?
