"The New Normal" Recap: The Milking Way

So? Did you like last nights The New Normal? I didn't. In fact, I had to scrap my first recap because I was stuck in the yelling place. So I petted my kitties for a little bit and helped them list flaws in Ed's feline defense system until I felt better.

Bryan and David are having a picnic with David's colleague Ian and Ian's wife Megan. Just as Bryan is making a despairing comment about "eating in the dirt" Megan starts to breastfeed her baby. And this is the theme of the evening.

Bryan is outraged to find out that Megan was run out of a restaurant for nursing her child and he decides to do a flash mob protest. Okay, so far, so good. We're at our usual level of silliness.

Then Bryan starts to lament about how he can't bond with his child like Megan can with hers because he can't breastfeed. And even though they explain it away as being a bonding issue and not a "wishing I was a girl" issue, it still just adds on to the wearying perception that Bryan is femme.

But hey, we can rally. It's early yet. There's no reason to give up. Shania is up at bat, and she's got a great average. But she bunts right into the dirt. When she finds out her mom never breast fed her, she is angrier than a Fox News correspondent hearing that Obama's approval numbers are up.

She demands to be given some of the forthcoming breast milk, which is insane and skeevy all at the same time. I never like it when Shania acts like she's the boss and I am truly relieved when Goldie (for once) puts her foot down. Shania seems a little shocked that she's not being given her way.

The only thing saving this scene is hearing that the maternity clothes Bryan and Rocky are giving Goldie are from season one of Sing and the fake baby plot. Ryan wants to be very sure you understand Sing andGlee are exactly the same show.

It's around this point that I realize the downside of being a recapper — I don't have the option of turning the show off.

We get more John Stamos this week as Jane continues to pursue him. He takes her to the best food truck in Los Angeles, which makes absolutely no sense given what a fussy metrosexual he is. However, it does give him the chance to use his powerful charm to let Jane know he won't put up with her racist comments.

The protest flash mob is straight out of Glee which would be annoying and improbable if not for the fact that Bryan isRyan Murphy. It ends with little of what I call "humiliation humor" that is so popular these days and that I can't stand. So I start playing Plants vs. Zombies while I wait for my suffering to end.

The episode wraps up its two main plots in an admirable effort to make it all seem worth it. They want me to accept that Bryan's insanity about breastfeeding was due to his belief that the reason his mom and he aren't close is because she didn't breastfeed him. This reasoning is what the Urban Dictionary calls "weak tea." And besides, didn't we already do the plot with Bryan worrying about bonding with his kid?

Shania explains that she's worried that when the baby comes, her mom won't have time for her. This might be okay, if not for the fact that Shania is nine and not four and that she has above-average intelligence that would allow her to understand that her mom won't be raising this baby. We've already had Shania hint she thinks the baby will be her sibling. How many times does Goldie have to explain surrogacy to her?

But she doesn't even try. Instead, Goldie says she will always make time for Shania. I hate it when characters neglect to explain the obvious.

And so the train-wreck finally comes to an end. What did you guys think?
