News
Vulture reports that Kyle MacLachlan will be making a return appearance to How I Met Your Mother. Do they really want us to remember the Zoey storyline we've all worked hard to forget ever existed?
I don't know what to think of this. The NBC pilot The Gates has replaced Aasif Mandvi in favor of Greg Germann. Mandvi is a great talent, so that's discouraging, but I'd also welcome Germann in another comedy role.
2 Broke Girls may have wasted its Super Bowl spotlight on an ad that only emphasized that the jokes are still lazy and hacky, but they did have the wisdom of getting the faboo David LaChapelle to direct the ad.
Dallas is getting a little bionic with a recurring role going to Lee Majors, as EW reports. Majors will play an ex of Sue Ellen.
There's a reboot in the works for Thunderbirds Are Go!. ITV is planning to make 26 episodes that will include a "unique mix" of CGI, live sets and an art style that pays tribute to the original. Is anyone off to look for the music video for Fuzzbox's "International Rescue" with me?
Bravo just cast Anna Gunn for the comedy Rita, about an "outspoken private school teacher." Sounds like the network of the Real Housewives is taking the scripted series it is developing seriously.
Shonda Rimes told EW that the original idea for Scandal had Olivia Pope as the President's daughter. I'm not a Popus fan, but that sounds a lot less interesting than the show we got. Then again, it would still be more interesting than most interviews with Olivia's real-life inspiration.
That CBS comedy pilot with Anna Faris and Allison Janney? It just added the precocious kid from New Girl to play Faris' son. I'm starting to look forward to it.
It turns out there's a dark side to all these legendary reality shows getting new seasons. Now Fox is working on reviving The Swan, the appalling series where women were given plastic surgery to compete in a beauty pageant. It's only a special, but they're going to find former stars whose looks have faded (Happy Days'Erin Moran is mentioned) so we'll still have a show that says that a woman's worth is based on her looks.
Looking at Thursday's ratings, most people were talking about those disastrous ratings for Do No Harm, but the grand finale of 30 Rockdrew the biggest audience in two years.
Speaking of Do No Harm, is the problem that it was a show about a character leading a double life? The Hollywood Reporter notes that evil twins (Ringer), characters living dual lives (Lone Star and Awake) count as some of the biggest failures of the past few years — and they forgot (how did they manage it?) NBC's other Jekyll and Hyde drama, My Own Worst Enemy. Then again, looking at the debut ratings for Arrow and Beauty and the Beast maybe NBC could have advertised it with a shirtless Steven Pasquale.

How I Met Your Mother (CBS) 8:00 PM ET
Much like the slap bet, the original Robin Sparkles episode was so great, How I Met Your Mother has revisited it a few times, getting less of an impact each time. Thus, this time HIMYM goes big with a bunch of Canadian guest-stars (including Alan Thicke, Jason Priestley and k.d. lang) to tell the tale of the time Robin Sparkles rebelled and went all goth. Considering that HIMYM was only just renewed, this was probably written to work as the last Robin Sparkle story. Let's hope it lives up to the popularity of the character.
Bones (Fox) 8:00 PM ET
When the investigation into the death of a roller derby skater stalls, Angie decides to try to help by going undercover, which is the kind of story that had me wondering if I missed another Charlie's Angels remake.
The Carrie Diaries (CW) 8:00 PM ET
It's Carrie's first Halloween party in the big city, thanks to Larissa, and she's decided to share the experience with Walt. She may not know it, but Carrie's just ensured herself a place in the memories of a young, struggling-to-figure-himself-out gay.
Switched at Birth (ABC Family) 8:00 PM ET
Lucas Grabeel is great, but Toby has been the one character who has seemed to challenge the Switched at Birth team. Gambling addiction aside, most of his stories have felt a little uninspired and uncertain. I'd like to think that could be his story, feeling a little boring and identity-less when the rest of the family can be defined by their role in the family scandal... and, with luck, Toby will have more of an identity when we meet grandpa Kennish when Toby needs a college recommendation.
Being Human (Syfy) 9:00 PM ET
According to the episode description, "Sally confronts Aidan over his reckless behavior." That's Josh trying to get Aidan to stop being so good looking — rather hypocritical, once you consider the person making the intervention.
Bunheads (ABC Family) 9:00 PM ET
Another former Stars Hollow resident shows up in Paradise as Liza Weil tries to steal a dance recital from Fanny, which kinda makes this the Emily vs. Paris battle you've been wanting to see.
90210 (CW) 9:00 PM ET
Silver may be reaching for Adrianna levels of awfulness, but at least she got caught quickly. Maybe she'll show signs of her previously likable self when Teddy names his conditions tonight.
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (HBO) 9:00 PM ET
In case you need a dose of rage and fury, HBO has this documentary about sexual abuse in a Catholic school for deaf youth — a case where the priest involved was never punished.
The Following (Fox) 9:00 PM ET
It's the secret origin of Hardy and Carroll, thanks to the latest follower to step out of the shadows. Where did all the steamy stares come from?
RuPaul's Drag Race (Logo) 9:00 PM ET
Sooner or later everyone ends up lip synching for their lives, but I guess this season Ru's speeding up the process with tonight's "Lip Sync Extravaganza Eleganza".
Castle (ABC) 10:00 PM ET
Jack Coleman returns tonight as a murder victim turns out to have ties to Senator Bracken, leaving Beckett hopeful that the Senator may finally meet justice.
Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) 10:00 PM ET
Sweeps means another occasion to dip into the well of the classic series with a remake of "Hookman," where a double amputee (played by Peter Weller in this version) goes about killing the police officers he blames for his injury. Er, really? I understand the episode is seen as a classic but that seems a bit... insensitive for 2013.
That Sex Show (Logo) 10:30 PM ET
Logo's expanding its late night talk with this show where four experts offer advice for viewer-submitted questions about sex. Keep your fingers crossed this can be as interesting as reading a Savage Love column, though I probably would like it better if NewNowNext sex-expert Conner Habib were a part of the show.
