- And here it is, the Greatest 80's TV Theme Song/Opening! At #1 is ... Velvet
- If you've never heard of Velvet, it's understandable. The pilot was aired just once on ABC on August 27, 1984, but the opening left an indelible impression on a certain gay lad. Aaron Spelling had a huge hit with Charlie's Angels, and this was his attempt to replicate the magic. But how to up the ante? Instead of three kick-ass ladies ... how about four? And let's find a way to incorporate the fitness craze sweeping the nation! Thus Velvet was born, with the most fabulous premise in the history of everything ... aerobics instructors by day/government agents by night! And to top it off, let's create the most batshit insane opening possible. We've got Leah Ayes, Sheree J. Wilson, Dawson Leery's Mother, and Shari Belafonte Harper at her most 80's. Each lady will display her special ability while showcasing the theme of female empowerment by dancing in a giant V. And let's add in the most innocuous but hilariously smutty lyrics in TV history: "You reach out, and gently brush ... Velvet." And lets give the ladies a possibly gay version of "Q," and finally ... "Polly Bergen as Mrs. Vance." Can you understand why it still affects me all these years later? Sadly, Velvet never made it past the pilot stage, but it is my favorite opening.theme of the 80's
