I didn't hate the Grammys, and I found myself both drawn to and slightly underwhelmed by our man Frank Ocean's meditative, painful ballad "Forrest Gump." But could that be anti-Tom Hanks bias? Is this the greatest LGBT Grammy performance ever?
I give Frank credit in the following arenas: commanding vulnerability, odd-as-hell staging, male pronoun specificity, and general gorgeousness. I dock him a few points for less-than-his-best singing and a less-than-his-best song, frankly. But still: Holler at this man-to-man ode.
But alas, my favorite LGBT Grammy performance of all time is the otherworldly k.d. lang, whose voice is basically impossible. "Constant Craving" is so awesome that I can hardly believe the world was good enough to love and appreciate it. She is just dynamite, and I have always loved her amazing face, tenderness, and beguiling stare. Whose voice even compares? She's the hurt of Hank Williams Sr. and the gravitas of Annie Lennox, plus so much more.
A greatly overrated performance was Elton John's turn with Eminem on "Stan" at the 2001 Grammys. The Dido sample is a little too clever, and Elton seems to be pronouncing every syllable like it's the end of a sentence. Not great. Also: Congrats on flicking off a camera, Eminem. Happy 4th birthday.
