The Shipping News: Do Canon Couples Count as Slash?

Hey everyone! This is Adricoming to you this week because we at The Shipping News don’t stick to no schedules! (Also, several of us are slaves to thesis papers and we’ve got each other’s backs). The Fandom News section comes to you this week courtesy of our lovely Catherine, everything else is silly little me. Let’s get to it!

Fandom News

  • Klainers rejoiced two weeks ago, and it was contagious: various other fandoms, notably Destiel shippers, started borrowing visuals from Kurt and Blaine’s backseat hookup and putting them in Tumblr gifsets for other slash pairings. Take note, graphic makers: the Glee fandom provided you a goldmine of sexy camera shots. Now use your powers for good.

  • Last week’s episode of Supernatural was heavy with Wincest parallels, from the recurring theme of soulmates and sacrifice to the concept of forbidden love (and subsequent light bondage sex we all imagine Sam is into.) It ended on a heavy note for the brothers, so we predict some serious Winchester angst in the future--and all the fix-it fanfiction that generally comes with it.
  • On Tuesday, February 19, Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis was kind and/or courageous enough to risk setting foot on Tumblr again and spent some time answering fan questions on the official Teen Wolf blog. Not only did he confirm that fan-favorite Danny would be getting some action next season, but he also handled the (inevitable, let’s face it) Sterek question with class. I’ll say it again: Jeff Davis might be the Gene Roddenberry of this generation.

Look at him, off to get some. You go get some Danny, four for you Danny.

  • The season finale of Suits aired last Thursday, and the term “rollercoaster of emotions” was probably invented to describe episodes like this one. Not even the accidental shipping of Louis and Nigel can make up for how strained Mike and Harvey’s relationship seems to be at this point. On the bright side, for those who haven’t given this fantastic series a chance, now’s the time: the third season will probably start airing toward the end of the summer, which gives you several months to catch up on the first 28 episodes and, hey, maybe even read a fic or two.

Slash: Do Canon Couples Count?

(source)

There has been confusion about this for a while, and sometimes I think we don’t give a straight answer about it (pun shamelessly intended). That’s because like much of the terminology in fandom, there is no absolutely correct answer. Are gay couples that are actually part of the canon of a show, movie, or book still considered a slash pairing and thus relevant for discussion here? My personal opinion is that yes, all pairings made up of two men are considered slash and all pairings made up of two women are considered femslash, canon and non-canon alike.

Here at The Shipping News we tend to highlight and fan-squee over pairings like Destiel and Drarry– popular and fan-loved, but not strictly speaking canonical. Sometimes when I do my own write ups I debate about how appropriate it is to have my fangasms over my literary loves Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane from the Mortal Instruments Series or the oldies but goodies Brian and Justin from Queer as Folk.

There are great reasons for this, the most important of which is, we get a lot of their love already and one could argue there isn’t as much of a need for the dedication to create fanwork. But the truth is that just because fanwork and enthusiasm isn’t absolutely necessary to give us our fix it doesn’t mean there isn’t a ton of it. For every fic where John and Sherlock find their way to more-than-flatmates there is one about Kurt and Blaine in any number of universes, small domestic moments, and things that Fox will never let us see.

Slash for me includes canon and non-canon, and I like to fangirl and celebrate both the tiny moments of subtext and the major wins of kisses and hook-ups with zero guess work.

Pairing of the Week: Janto

Back in High School I had a brief stint of theater fever, I fancied myself an actress because I attended a couple of meetings of our Drama Club. But the thing that drove me to wearing black and drinking a lot of coffee for a month and a half was a Torchwood radio play called "The Dead Line". In it, Ianto Jones sits by a comatose Jack Harkness and gives the most beautiful monologue declaration of love ever. It got to me not only because it was a touching scene, but because it really captured what Ianto and Jack were all about, namely Ianto adoring Jack and not feeling like he was special enough and Jack coming through in the end, showing just how much Ianto meant to him.

Jack and Ianto are an underlying force throughout the entire show (you know, before they came State-side and just…we don’t talk about what happened when Torchwood became an American co-production we just don’t). They’re not making out or going at it behind potted plants every episode, but they always gravitate to one another- you never lose the feeling that they come in a pair no matter whose throat Jack has his tongue down on any given episode.

Much like the creative integrity of the show, this ship ended in tragedy, but a lot of the best romances in history and fiction do. We ship you like Myfanwy did, babies, and we always will.

Fic Rec:

Hello my name is Adri and I like Danny Mahealani. A lot. It’s no mystery that everyone loves Danny, but the fic out there is sadly scarce. Stiles and Danny are a fairly strong pairing out there and though it’s no OTP of mine, I’ll read anything with my Danny boy. Now, my Danny boy and a piercing kink? Day made. So this week I recommend some prime Stanny fic to you all, “The Taste Of Sweat And Metal On His Tongue by slythatheart.

Excerpt:

Considering what he'd seen, it was probably good for Danny that he'd never given Stiles an outright no, because that no had turned very, very rapidly into a yes. And maybe – well, almost certainly– nothing would come of it, but at least that wasn't because Danny had been short sighted and told Stiles no too quickly.

Because holy shit.

Stiles had a navel piercing.

Stiles.

Stiles.

Had a navel piercing.

It had played on his mind for the entire weekend. Every time he closed his eyes he saw a glint of metal surrounded by warm flesh. When he ate, the fork sliding between his lips made him ache to know the feeling of body jewelry slipping against his tongue and teeth.

On Friday night – and each night after – he'd gone to bed with thoughts of nibbling along skin and tonguing gently against Stiles' navel; it left him hard, wanting. That first night, he'd tossed and turned, ignoring his frustration until he finally fell asleep in the early hours of Saturday morning.
