For reasons that aren't completely clear, Denise Crosbywill be the Celebrity Grand Marshall for the Boston Pride Parade. Crosby is most famous as Tasha Yar on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but if she's been an advocate for GLBT rights, I've missed it beyond appearing inStar Trek: Blood and Fire. Still gay geeks are no doubt thrilled.
Also from the geeky side, NASA is planning to send a robotic space craft to retrieve an asteroid in 2019, pulling it into stable orbit past the moon, then send astronauts to study it. It's the ambitious type of exploration we've been missing.
Snoop Dog Liondoesn't think gays will ever be welcome in rap, or the locker room for that matter. "Frank Ocean ain't no rapper. He's a singer. It's acceptable in the singing world, but in the rap world I don't know if it will ever be acceptable because rap is so masculine. It's like a football team. You can't be in a locker room full of mother*cking tough-ass dudes, then all of a sudden say, 'Hey, man, I like you.' You know, that's going to be tough." Hey Snoop, 1) I think we can control ourselves; 2) Gays are tough, we have to be with all the crap we take from the likes of you, and a gay athlete at the professional level would be tougher still.
Ray J is trying to get some publicity for his new album by putting a pixilated version ofKim Kardashian on the cover and using the title "I Hit It First." Some of the charming lyrics include "She might move on to rappers and ball players / But we all know I hit it first" as well as "If you woulda come back to me girl we’ll make another movie.”
In a move that should surprise no one, Congressional Republicans are demanding to know what kind of permission Beyonce and Jay-Z received to travel to Cuba on vacation. Travel is hugely restricted for Americans, and the Carters are major Obama supporters, so everyone smells scandal. Personally, while Cuba still has some major issues and a dark past, I think the best way the U.S. could effect change (if it wanted to) is to lift travel restrictions and let the resort money flow in and we can corrupt their society like we've done with much of the world.
Congratulations to Christopher Schelling and Augusten Burroughs, who wed Monday on Staten Island.
S.H.I.E.L.D.is now known asMarvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is a bit unwieldy if you ask me, and the Marvel seems redundant. But like most bloggers, I just hate typing all those periods in the name. The show has no buzz, but that's because a select few are all that have seen it, and it's considered pretty much a lock to get picked up to series.
Fox News reporter Jane Winteris under pressure to reveal a confidential source in relation to the James Holmes trial in Colorado, and nobody is talking about it. The only mention before the Buzzfeed piece I had seen was a brief note on The Five on Fox News at the gym on Friday, and some say that it's hatred of Fox News that's keeping the story from being talked about. Generally speaking, the confidentiality of journalistic sources is a big deal, and no court should be threatening a reporter with jail time to reveal.
Codebreaker, the docu-drama about Alan Turing, is heading to theaters under the "theater on demand" program, where any theater can book the movie when a sufficient number of movie goers pledge to see the film in advance. Current screenings are lined up in Chicago, New York, Seattle, and San Francisco, and details on how to purchase tickets is at the link.
Jonathan Knightleft the stage of aNew Kids On the Block concert Thursday, then tweeted "I'm sorry." Knight has talked about suffering from anxiety before. He never returned to the stage, but did make his Today Show performance Friday morning.
Kinky Boots, the new Broadway musical from Harvey Fierstein and Cindy Lauperis getting positive reviews, even if they say it can be a little preachy. Notably, the music from Lauper carries you through the message moments.
Paul Reubensis set to voice theWhite Rabbit in Wonderland, the Once Upon a Time spinoff. The Rabbit will be a CGI character in the show, which can't be cheap.
John Barrowman and Colton Haynes audition for Dancing With the Stars
But John always goes back to Scott
ESPN released a poll about gay athletes, and it's partly heartening (most people think we're very close to out pro athletes in the major U.S. sports) to the disappointing (56% think a player coming out would be selfish and hurt the team), but I suppose there's only one way to know for sure.
Why would fans want their favorite player to wait until retirement to be happy?
Adam Lambert has been causing quite a stir with the glasses
The David Burtka/Neil Patrick Harris birthday scavenger hunt took them to Tommy Hilfiger
Did the Enterprise get stuck in a tachyon field again?
When Rep. Eric Cantor went on CNBC, he planned on talking about taxes and the economy, but the hosts wanted to ask him about marriage equality. As the hosts asked him what difference it made if gay couples had equal rights, Cantor fell back to saying that some people have religious beliefs on the subject, and that those people need to be heard and not demonized. This is the argument that I just can't take anymore. We've heard you. We've been hearing people with religious beliefs tell us that we're sick and diseased for decades now. You've had your say. And for GLBT folks asking to be treated equally isn't abusing you and your views, it's simply asking you to keep your personal religious views out of our government. When you refuse to do your constitutional duty to do that, we have the right to complain. It's how things work. We're not calling religious people sick and diseased, we just want them to quit abusing our human rights.
I admit, I'm completely in love with the Flaming Screens movie reviews. This is how you talk about a movie with your friends. Very few people talk about structure and the details of the green screen like most critics. They talk about the characters, the actors, and maybe not just about what they did onscreen. Giving it a fun gay twist just makes it feel like home, and there's plenty of actors to talk about in GI Joe Retaliation.
I really wanted to use two Saturday Night Live sketches today, but the cold open with Kim Jong Un talking about marriage equality isn't available from NBC. It had a solid premise that they ran into the ground by going on too long, but it was a great mashup of the two major stories of the week, North Korea and the number of politicians tripping over themselves to endorse marriage equality. So we'll have to settle for the Bathroom Businessman, because it's socially relevant. We used to take a magazine to the restroom with us at most. Now if we don't have a phone or a iPad with us, we go nuts. But is it appropriate to tweet, Facebook and email while doing your business? Would you talk on the phone while seated on the toilet? So why is it acceptable to communicate otherwise? I was Facetiming with someone the other day and desperately needed to get off the phone so I could pee, there was no way I was taking a video call into the bathroom. So where do we draw the line?
Facebook Home is a new lock screen for Android that brings your whole Facebook world front and center. But do you need all that jumping out in your life all the time, with friends' status messages right on the home screen? What about some of your friends? Because the flight attendant in this new commercial doesn't seem to care for Calpernia Addams and Shangela jumping out during takeoff.
