Chris Pine stars in People Like Us, opening today.

If you're planning to go to the movies this weekend and Magic Mike isn't your cup of tea, then you might consider People Like Us as an alternative.

In People Like Us, Chris Pine plays Sam -- and he's kind of a jerk. But like many of Pine's characters, he has a heart of gold. When Sam's father dies, he finds out he has a long lost sister (Elizabeth Banks) and a feisty nephew (Michael Hall D'Addario) and his life turns upside down -- not to mention his relationship with his mother (Michelle Pfeiffer).

The film is written and directed Alex Kurtzman and represents a departure from his usual sci-fi and action-packed projects such as Transformers and Alias. Forget the globetrotting spies and mechanical aliens, People like Us is a very grounded story that is loosely based on Kutzman's relationship with his own sister.

We had the opportunity to chat with both Pine and Kurtzman about sibling relationships and the strength of family bonds-- and Pine defends himself against the accusation that he gravitates toward mildly "douchey" characters.
