- Continuing the 50 Greatest 80's TV Theme Songs/Openings!, Here's #23, Cagney & Lacey
- Airing on CBS from March 25, 1982 to May 16, 1988, Cagney & Lacey started out as a TV movie starring Tyne Daly and Loretta Swit, but when it was picked up as a mid-season replacement, TPTB at MASH wouldn't let Loretta out of her contract, so Meg Foster stepped in as tough cop Chris Cagney. However, in one of the most famous anecdotes of 80's TV, the show was canceled after its initial six episodes because the CBS brass thought the ladies looked like "A couple of dykes." After complaints from viewers, the network decided to give the show another chance, but only if the "too aggressive" Meg Foster was replaced. So Sharon Gless was brought in to play the third Chris Cagney. Unfortunately, it didn't help, and the show was canceled again after the second season. That's when history was made with what may have been the first successful letter-writing campaign on TV, with CBS deluged by angry fans demanding the show be brought back. They relented, the show was renewed, the ratings rose, and the rest is history. But it's a shame they couldn't keep the first season's opening. It featured a fabulous Nelson Riddle 70's style score, segueing into the bluesy "Ain't That The Way," performed by Marie Cain.
- The opening for the second season on was less interesting, but still fun, with that famous Bill Conti score, and the appearance of a shirtless Martin Kove (and if you want see more of Martin Kove ... much, much, more, check out Andy Warhol's Women In Revolt.)
