"The New Normal" Recap: Gaydar

Last night was just the sort of episode I like. A few good laughs, some meta-humor, some genuine warmth and all the gay you could ever hope to handle. It still kind of amazes me this show is on television.

We kick off with Bryan wanting to put their baby in a traditional vintage christening gown for the picture for the birth announcement. I am reminded of Kurt and his kilt from Glee. Yes, it technically is not a dress, but that's what it looks like, and that's what people will think it is.

David points this out and Bryan thinks he's overreacting. Again, here is where this show excels for me. Rather than mining their disagreement for tension and drama, Bryan simply tells David that it was up to him to come up with the next idea for what their son would wear for the photos — like, you know, adults do.

Jane is showing her first house. A man named Bryce (played by John Stamos) shows up and gives her a hard time. It turns out he was sent to check in and see how her open house was going. It seems like this was stuff they should have covered before the open house, but whatever.

Sparks and fur fly as they snipe at each other. Jane is sure he is gay, but he says he's not. Nor is the guy who would be written off as a stereotype who works in the hair salon. I like this. First the show challenged gender stereotypes, now it's going after gay stereotypes.

Goldie and Shania are visiting the set of Sing! and getting a tour of the studio. This leads them to meet the girl playing the actress whose name I think is Clea. Slowly but surely, the Sing! cast is working itself into TNN. This could be awesome or very bad. We'll have to see.

They also meet Rocky's gold-star gay boyfriend, Chris. Only Rocky thinks he's straight and they have a "thing." Shania is sure he's not, which makes Rocky a little peevish.

It is decided that they will invite both men over to Casa de Gay for dinner and a game of "Gay or Not Gay?" They're going to quiz the guys to get an idea of how much homo they have in them. Strangely, one of the questions is not, "did you ever create a fake girlfriend on the internet and then have her die of leukemia and/or a car accident?"

Both guys score pretty high in the gay test, but it's not completely conclusive. Then (of course) it comes out that the entire evening was a test. Bryce storms off. Chris gets very offended when Rocky flat out asks him. But I can't really see how she doesn't just know already.

Anyhoo, she meets up with him on set and he fesses up to his 'mo-ness. She assures him they are still besties and promises to beat up anyone who is mean to him on set. Aww, I love Rocky.

Jane more humbly goes to Bryce and explains that after her husband, she's not willing to get involved with another gay dude. Bryce settles her worries by planting one on her.

The boy dress issue is resolved when David concedes with a nice speech about how he needs to not be afraid of what people might be thinking of their gay family. His only required concession is the addition of a football helmet.

Best Bit:

Ryan: "If this [the game show] works, I can repackage it with Has-Beens and then sell it to Fox! Beach  house!"

Best Performance: Once again, it goes to Ellen Barkin for Nana. I love the way they have taken this character and chipped away all the stuff that wasn't working and turned her into such a complicated woman. Her speech about how much she loved her husband was wrenching.

Gayest Moment: Every single moment of Chris' (Mark Consuelos) performance. For serious.
